  • Voltage Transformers / Potential Transformers (VT/PT) - Instrument Transformers
Voltage Transformers / Potential Transformers (VT/PT) - Instrument Transformers

Voltage transformers (VT), also known as potential transformers (PT), are a specialized type of transformers, collectively referred to as 'instrument transformers' alongside current transformers (CT). Voltage transformers usually consist of an iron core, a primary winding, and one or two secondary windings. In application, the primary winding is connected in parallel to an AC circuit with a voltage exceeding 200V. The VT converts the higher primary voltage (V1) to a standardized low secondary voltage (V2), typically 100V or 110V maximum (according to prevalent IEC or IEEE standards today). The secondary voltage is then utilized by instruments for purposes such as metering, monitoring, and protection through relays. Based on the primary voltage rating, VTs can be classified into low, medium and high voltage types. They can also be categorized as indoor or outdoor types based on application; and as metering or protective types based on function. CIC is the first manufacturer in Taiwan to specialize in cast resin voltage transformers, with over 45 years of experience in R&D and production of indoor VTs. CIC also utilizes advanced technology transferred from MWB Messwandler-Bau in Germany to manufacture outdoor medium-voltage metering VTs. The main insulation material used in CIC voltage transformers is Araldite® epoxy resin (cycloaliphatic epoxy for outdoor units), ensuring consistently high quality. CIC performs type tests and routine tests on all voltage transformers at its in-house Advanced Electricity Lab, accredited by TAF (an ILAC member). From design, type testing, to production and final testing, CIC self-controls the entire process to guarantee quality and on-time delivery. With a wide range of ratings in voltage ratio, burden, insulation class, materials, construction and dimensions, CIC voltage transformers meet various application requirements. VTs can also be customized to fit specific needs. CIC provides ODM/OEM services and manufactures products meeting different international standards. CIC voltage transformers have successfully reached markets in countries such as the United States, Canada, Russia, and Japan, with extensive use in power utilities, factories, major projects, electrical contractors for metering and distribution applications.
